“What is better – to be born good or to overcome your evil nature through great effort?”

– Paarthurnax.

For you who encounter this quote for the first time, don’t you think it’s hard to believe such amazing quote was originated from a game called The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, developed and published by Bethesda in 2011?

To give you a short background story, Paarthurnax was once the most trusted general and adviser of a powerful tyrant who enslaved other races that different from him. Paarthurnax then rebelled, joined, and supported the rebellion armies to overthrow the tyrant. By the way, Paarthurnax is not a human but a dragon.

One could argue that to be born good is the better option of the two. When you already good by nature people often think that this means you will always be good, does good all the time without expecting anything in return. On the other hand, with a nature for evil and before the suppression of it you may have a impulse to selfishness, to take all the things without sharing and to cause unjust harm to others. Even after you manage to overcome you evil nature with great effort and determination, you would already left scars and doubts in people’s mind. “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it“; although the past is in the past, that doubts will still lingers no matter how small it is and people will never wholly trust you.

Although, to some extend, I understand the ‘to be be born good’ choice, personally I believe to choose and being able to overcome the evil nature in you is the better option. I for one doesn’t believe that when you have good nature means you will always be good. To overcome your evil nature means you have tested both sides and take the choice to be good. Only a person who has ‘seen’ evil can truly understand the need for goodness (I think this is a book or a movie quote). Overcoming your evil nature probably doesn’t mean it will mend your past mistakes, but when evil appears again to tempt you, know that you hold more resolve in your heart than the one that never tasted evil.
